Google Reader Play is a new Reader feature that plays a slideshow of cool items from around the web based on the stories you star.

Links in direct messages on Twitter and e-mail notifications about direct messages will be filtered in an attempt to stop phishing attacks.

If you use Windows 7 Media Center to record TV, you'd probably prefer skipping commercials. After all, a big reason you record programs is to avoid commercials, right?

An anonymous reader writes "'Alien' and 'Star Wars' art director Roger Christian was given £25,000 by George Lucas in 1979 to make a 25-minute medieval B-feature called 'Black Angel.' This spiritual tale of a knight on a strange quest was inspired by Christian's near-fatal fever when he fell ill in Mexico making 'Lucky Lady.' 'Black Angel' made a huge impression, not least because it shared the dark tone of 'Empire Strikes Back.' John Boorman showed it to the crew of 'Excalibur' as a template for how he wanted his film to look, and 'Black Angel' went on to influence films such as 'Dragonslayer' and 'Legend' throughout the 1980s and beyond. But it has not been seen by anyone since 'Empire' finished its theatrical run.

The recycling symbol is actually kind of deceptive. The three arrows in a circle implies that by recycling, we are enabling the material to live forever in our little product ecosystems. Yet there's lots of stuff that can only be recycled once, which is better than nothing but worse than great.

Take plastics, for instance:

Chandrasekhar Narayan, who leads I.B.M.'s science and technology team at its Almaden Research Center in San Jose, Calif., said the presence of metal catalysts in plastics means that they often can only be recycled once before ending up in a landfill.

"When you try to take a product and recycle it, the metal in the polymer continues to degrade the polymer so it gets increasingly less strong," said Mr. Narayan.

It's a refurb, and shipping will run you about $23, but this model includes two games and a hard drive--making it one of the best Xbox 360 deals I've seen.
